We can learn much from Sherlock Holmes.  Even the London Police force - Scotland Yard consulted with Holmes when they faced the difficult task of solving a mystery.  Holmes used what he called the "Science of Deduction" and he summarized his methods as follows:
1. I observe everything.
2. From what I observe, I deduce everything.
3. When I've eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
( And, isn't the truth what we're searching for?)

Let's take a look at the real world.  When working any case, especially a crime scene, investigators often make crucial errors.  It's a HUGE mistake to leave even a single stone "unturned".  If you don't search the entire area, you are likely to overlook important clues.  And, there's no time like the present, to follow a HOT lead.   If you will follow that fresh lead, it will invariably branch off into additional leads.  Follow them all.  Then, and only then can you rest.  HHaigh

After all, "I don't mind a reasonable amount of trouble."  (Sam Spade, The Maltese Falcon - 1941).
